A DIY glass block shower experience made possible with Egyptian pyramid building ingenuity

A DIY glass block shower experience made possible with Egyptian Pyramid building ingenuity - Innovate Building Solutions

You may be wondering, “What does building a glass block shower have in common with Egyptian pyramids?” That would be a logical question. Sometime when you take on a custom shower project with heavy materials (in this case a beefy solid surface shower base and custom prebuilt glass block shower wall sections), just like the building of the Egyptian pyramids, the construction feat can pit mankind (or womankind) in a mental battle with materials they want to use.

The weight of the materials was one of the challenges facing JR in a 2 year-long design and installation of a custom glass block shower. He invested time planning, measuring (remeasuring) designing securing products and then building a grand glass block shower unlike any others I’ve seen. It’s size, design and shape were not only unique – but the project was done without a full-time general contractor leading the way (now that’s a risky proposition).

A project like this takes a special person (OK – John’s not your average guy). It takes a focus on design, planning and some special “engineering” along the way (some anticipated – and some solutions figured out “on the fly”). In the video below I’ll let John share with you his DIY custom glass block shower and solid surface base experience (and what it has to do with Egyptian pyramid building).

Now that you’ve watched John’s video, I’ll share the 5 D’s to get you to the top with a unique glass block shower experience for your home (even if you’re project is not as grand as John’s). At the end John and I would love to get your opinions of his glass block shower. I want to hear your questions if you’re struggling with the steps to make this project a reality.

5 ½ Amazing Glass Block Shower Designs with Personality

5 1/2 amazing glass block shower designs

Boring. Mediocre. Run of the mill. In a nutshell that’s what most glass block shower designs are like. Get one standard 8” x 8” x 4” wavy glass block, stack it on top on the next block, lay them up in a straight line, stick a door on the other side and call it done. Now you have your plain Jane shower. Woo hoo!

When I was growing up my Dad Joe would say the word “mediocre” was a dirty word. He challenged me, my brother Frank and sister Venera to be the best we could be. He wanted us to become the best version of ourselves and do it with with “personopoloy.” You may ask what is “personopoly?” It was my Dad’s funny made up word to us to lead our lives with our own unique personality.

In the article below I’d like you to go on a trip with me to see 5 ½ incredible glass block shower designs (our company had the pleasure of working on) which certainly aren’t boring or mediocre. These designs are distinctive because their owners were not afraid to let their uniqueness and “personopoly” show. They used persistence to find the right suppliers and contractors to make their dream showers a reality and wouldn’t take no for an answer!

Eye popping Piet Mondrian inspired colored glass block transom highlights a new studio office space

Piet Mondrian Inspired Colored Glass Block Transom

Do you have a space in your home which is uninspired or underutilized because the materials used and the design make it an uncomfortable? Such was the case for Josefa Soto and Charlie Fabb with the room in the back of their home. The space was basically a “3 season room” gone bad!

According to Charlie Fabb, “As a result of the challenges in this room we basically used the space as a storage depot! The windows were large and single pane and very inefficient. There was no insulation in the walls making the space too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.” Although this space had potential – it was currently a glorified storage room. As Charlie said, “Reclaiming this space was critical to make the entire home more live-able for our family!”

Charlie and Josefa didn’t just want any old functional room though – they wanted a space with which would show their interests and personality with some drama to capture the eye. See below 3 key steps Charlie and Josefa, with the help of Susan and Bob Dyas of Epic Group Ohio, used to transform this space into a fun and functional studio and office.

Project Spotlight: Transforming a 75 year old small bathroom with a glass block tile shower – San Diego California

When you live in Southern California it’s essential to make every inch of a small bathroom count….and that’s exactly what Jeff R. accomplished in his recent bath renovation project. As Jeff said, “The bathroom in our 75 year old home was shot. The tile had hairline cracks, the shower area was dark, the shower pan was failing, and the earthquakes and tremors where part of the cause of the tile falling apart.” It was not possible to change the size or layout of this room – so the challenge would be to make the space nicer and more functional…but how?

Learn below how Jeff, his wife, an interior designer and their contractor not only used materials like a unique “floating” glass block wall to create a fresh contemporary look – but also embraced a famous tile design element to make their small space sparkle.
