How to Install a Glass Block Bathroom Window in a New Construction or Addition Project

Installing a glass block bathroom window in new construction framed openings has never been easier. Follow these simple steps to get a great looking window that is sized correctly the first time.

• Determine whether you want a framed or unframed window– Most new construction glass block windows can be installed easiest with a vinyl framed glass block window that has nailing fins for ease of installation. However if your upper floor wall construction is a poured or masonry wall then an unframed window will suit your project best.

• Determine the approximate size of the opening – Since glass block sizes are available in 2” increments (the sizes available for the blocks include 4 x 8, 6 x 6, 6 x 8, 8 x 8, and 12 x 12) you’ll want to determine your approximate window size in 2” increments.

• Consult a glass block sizing chart or call a prefabricated window manufacturer– For wood framed openings once you have your approximate sizing you’ll want to look up what size to make the rough opening of the vinyl framed window. For masonry openings call a glass block prefabricated window manufacturer to see the various sizes they can make your unframed window (note – the sizes with the unframed system can vary depending on whether silicone or mortar joints are used).

• Pick a glass block design – There are several pattern selections for the blocks you can choose from. If your bathroom window is on the side of the home close to neighbors you may want a high privacy block pattern like Icescapes, Iceberg, Delphi or Pristal from Pittsburgh Corning and Mulia. If privacy is not as large a concern the Wave or Decora patterns work well.

• Choose colored or frosted glass block to dress up your design – If you want a one of a kind look consider adding some frosted or colored glass blocks. These units can be used randomly, as a stripe, or throughout the whole window assembly.
