High security commercial glass block windows at 45 Degree Cycles in Columbus Ohio

Commercial glass block windows have been used for many reasons – but a driving force in many projects is increasing security and reducing the chance of break-ins or vandalism. When Dean Strasser got the entrepreneurial bug and decided to open 45 Degree Cycles (a motorcycle sales and repair business) at 1748 E. Livingston Rd. in Columbus Ohio he knew he would need to transform the graffiti filled walls and boarded up windows with products that would not only be stylish and inviting to his customers – but also would be secure against intruders gaining entry to the building at off business hours. These objectives led him to use glass block windows.

Learn below about Dean’s glass block product choice and the installation approach used by the team of Sean Malmsberry and Isaac Clark of the Columbus Glass Block division of Innovate Building Solutions.

Before - St Agatha Church Gymnasium Windows broken and cracked blocks

The problem: St. Agatha Church in Columbus Ohio had a legitimate concern about the functionality and safety of deteriorated old glass block windows in several second story windows surrounding their gymnasium. Some of these challenges included:

  • A good number of the 70 to 80 year old glass blocks (which used an old cold fusing technology) had been cracked and some had even retained water.  There was a concern about a block cracking and injuring someone or damaging the wood gym floor.

  • The old glass block installation was not properly done with materials to allow for expansion and contraction and therefore the mortar joints were failing and had been patched with silicone caulk several times over the years.

  • The broken and dingy old blocks (glass blocks used to be manufactured with the pattern on the outside which retained dirt & debris) did not provide a nice appearance for the gym or provide as much natural light as was desired.

  • The energy efficiency of the old blocks was not up to modern standards.

The problem: Sam Adams Brewery had old rusted metal framed factory windows the size of several large garage doors which were 50 feet off the ground. These windows were single paned, the steel frames were rusted, air was flowing in through some broken sashes that would not close due to rust. The windows (in addition to being very high up) were only reachable by working around a maze of pipes and water tanks. Sam Adams wanted this installation to be completed in a short amount of time to minimize wasted energy costs while the new windows would be installed.

One of the biggest money wasting places in old factories is existing wood and metal framed windows. These old windows are often single panes of glass, have frames that are rusted or rotted and offer an easy point of entry for vandals. When Martindale Electric called Cleveland Glass Block they were looking for a window solution that would combine high security, reduced heating costs and operability to provide air flow for their factory workers.

The solution: A mixture of operable vinyl double hung replacement windows with durable glass blocks.
