I have to admit my fascination with glass has grown exponentially with increased exposure to contemporary and modern home design. The light, shine, flexibility and clean open spaces created with glass are a magnet for my eye. Since I’m a guy who hates even having a North elevation in my home (note – a North elevation is the darkest side of a home) it’s natural for me to like the effects created by the combination of light and glass. The flexibility of glass designs, textures and colors to create expansive views (or obscure them) make this material a contemporary designer or owners dream. The article below will highlight 7 unique uses of glass in a modern home.
Creating a custom home should not only be about creating a distinctive looking interior – but also about embracing the character of the lot and home’s facade as well. This dual objective to leverage the inside and outside assets was certainly paramount in a recent Kansas City urban design home project for builder Jane Kietzman and her husband Randy Kietzman (the architect on the project).
In the article below learn how Jane and Randy created a stunning design element and a visual connection between the inside and outside of this newly built custom home (located at 2405 Forest Ave. in the Beacon Hill area of Kansas City) by incorporating glass floor panels.
Glass flooring has made its way to Paris, putting a new spin on the classic tourist experience at the Eiffel Tower. Paris has long been known as the “City of Light” and just last month, the Eiffel Tower further enhanced the tourist experience by incorporating a feature that makes it even more breathtaking—a new glass floor on the first floor that highlights a different kind of view of the sparkling city. Visitors and Parisians alike can now enjoy the classic views that the Eiffel is known for and glance 187 feet below on the glass landing.
While the Eiffel Tower is just one of the latest worldwide attractions jumping on the glass flooring trend, this product isn’t limited to inspiring landmarks (SkyView at the Grand Canyon) and commercial buildings like the Willis Tower in Chicago. Many homeowners are wondering how to incorporate dramatic glass floor elements, like the ones available at Innovate Building Solutions.
Many people love the “cool factor” of a glass floor or glass stair project but there are frequently concerns if the floor will be safe to walk on and if it is private enough (i.e. can a woman wearing a skirt not have to feel self-conscious walking on the glass surface). Let’s explore 5 design features which are critical to ensure not only a stylish project – but also one which is safe and private as well!
When you’ve got a beautiful view why hide it? Such was the thought of Rusty McClure about the stunning water feature in the back yard of his Columbus Ohio home. Imagine rushing waters colliding with rocks down a steep hillside with steps and landings leading to the Olentangy River – very cool and dramatic. With that being said Rusty saw even greater potential which could be gleaned from the landscape. The wooden stairs – while essential to travel down the hillside – were blocking the view of Rusty’s illuminated rushing water feature.
Rusty thought why not open up the view with some glass stair treads? Learn below how Rusty combined the structural glass products obtained through Innovate Building Solutions with the expert installation team of Mike Shurig Remodeling to create one inspired landscape design!
