Ah, the beauty, style and sophistication of a serpentine wall – stunning, dramatic, an architectural masterpiece. If you’ve seen the brick serpentine walls at the University of Virginia or the curvy, stepped concrete wall arising out of the Ohio River in Cincinnati you know how cool an S shaped wall can look. But – have you ever seen an S shaped wall made of glass blocks for a residential shower design? Have you ever thoughts about using a curved wall in a bathroom, kitchen, basement or commercial space? Are you intrigued? Read on.

The serpentine glass block wall project was the brainchild of a customer of Larry Harp of L & J Contractors of Cooksville Tennessee. Larry’s customer was looking to create something sleek, modern, and distinctive for their shower remodeling project.

Larry contacted Tashina Defibaugh, a shower designer at Columbus Glass Block. Tashina used specialized template cards to mirror the initial shaped wall concept from Larry. In addition she suggested a ready for tile custom shower base so the curvature of the S shaped glass block wall would match the form of the block wall.

Wall construction and fabrication detailing were done by Kevin Kretzer, Fabrication Manager of Columbus Glass Block. Kevin carefully crafted the wall using the vinyl stack fabrication system to ensure uniformity in the joints. The finished glass block wall (which will be 10 block high – 80”) were manufactured in 5 sections of 2 blocks high to make the installation and shipping easier.

Although the fabricated walls and base are now being shipped stayed tuned for more photos as this project progresses.
